  1. From the news post Indian Degrees Now Recognized in U.S.

    Fri, 30 Jan 2009 13:49:09 -0000

@ Indira, yes, psychology (non honors) course can also be acceptable. Just send in your transcripts (ask your university for this) to WES and then, you’ll get to know if they consider your bachelors equivalent to the US bachelors. I did the same. With a non honor major, I applied to WES and they happily gave me an equivalent status with a cool 3.87 overall GPA! Yes, General GRE, that you have to give if you want to study in the US. Most of the schools generally dont ask for a subject test, specially if you are applying for masters, so, general GRE should be it. Good luck indira!!

@ Yorrick- Thank you, I could call myself an easily excitable person, but not too emotional however. I haven’t been able to really understand why I can relate to characters in the books so much that I can emote completely. Actually, yeah, I do contemplate a lot when and after I read too… specially, somehow at this juncture of life, I am getting to read some really challenging and introspective books and so it makes the journey all the more speculative!

I discuss it with friends, they needn’t have read the book but of course, can always philosophize on the concept ;)

Which contemporary ones have you read, so that may be i’ll quote a few…. have you tried Virginia Woolf or George Orwell (he more being the “utopia” types)?

And of course, good luck with the research papers :)

When I say contemporary I mean in the last decade or so.

I read Disgrace by Coetzee a couple of years ago and I enjoyed it.

I forgot to add…... does anyone get too involved in the book that you emote with it?? Every book that I read generally, I can either cry, laugh, be in love as the characters in the book are! I can totally feel what they are feeling…... I remember crying over chicken soup series too…. This happens with me quite frequently… anyone else to whom this is a common occurrence?? This happens to me with movies too… I can easily be tear eyed or laugh with books, music and movies!! On the contrary, real life hardly has been able to make me cry!! thankfully though :-)

I can relate sort of. Law and Order makes me tear up. :P That’s interesting that you relate easily to characters. Are you an easily excitable person or do you cry easily only with books because you love reading so much?

Last somewhat literary thing that made me cry was when I watched Hamlet but I think I was just having a bad day. Books and even plays do not usually make me cry.

When I read books, I find myself contemplating them throughout the day even when I am not reading them. I have found certain books that just captivate me, but thankfully I have never reached that Quixote level. (Actually I am reading that book right now. I’m loving it.)

Often, if my mom sees me reading a certain book and I try to discuss it with her she will turn around and nag me about how I do the exact same thing as that darn main character either to teach me a lesson or just so I will shut up. I never discuss my research papers with her anymore.

Finding contemporary novels that I can stick to and enjoy is difficult, anyone have any recommendations?

I read wherever and whenever I can. I have serious trouble stopping myself if I start reading! I can go on, by the time I decide its time to hit the bed, (a lot times) the sun has already risen to wake others for the next morning! I never travel without a book or two! Cardinal rules of life have been to carry at least one book, a pen and paper all the time with me!! And, I love reading couple of books over and over again… like, may be I finished reading that book ages ago (or even a couple of days ago), I would just flip open some page and start all over again (not necessarily from the beginning or anywhere else in the book). Being a student, I still need to cram in a lot of Textbooks, but then, nothing like having other books to read and text books are glanced at (as usual) just before exams :D I have of course, quite a number of times read comics like Tin Tin and Calvin and Hobbes right out of the stores, because, I wouldn’t have been able to put them down and a (lot of times) over sized my budget with other books. For me – no folding or writing on books please! I’d appreciate them neat. Sometimes, if the books are too overpowering- then I generally do some writing for myself… reviews or reflections and keep them to go back to them sometime later – for every time you read a book, you learn something new, you notice something you didn’t may last time.

:) Seems like you really liked the book and enjoyed it!! Great!! I enjoyed it too when I did, and the best things about these kind of books are that every single time you read them, you learn something new and can see things with a new perspective! Have fun! Now, makes me feel like I want to go back and read it again… Thank you :)

  7. From the discussion How do we can help each other without exeeding?

    Sun, 25 Jan 2009 16:08:30 -0000

Very interesting thread of thought, I must say :) I personally think, “helping” is when you make the other person independent and not dependent of your help consistently. Sometimes, just “being there” helps, for, each of us are competent to help ourselves, and sometimes we just need a reassurance. Then again, this “reassurance” cannot be given /gotten all the time… so i think both the situation and people involved become deciding factors of how and when to help and how much to help…..

  8. From the lesson Some 3 year Indian Degrees to be recognized by WES

    Sun, 25 Jan 2009 15:52:20 -0000

Thank you albercht. This is an extremely important information especially saving anyone who is applying a year or more! Most of all, a lot of universities off late do ask for a credential evaluation, so getting it means to become competitive as compared to the rest of the population applying for the same course, because, someone screening the application might understand GPA better than Indian %s. Good Luck!!

Words are extremely effective in changing our perceptions about things, however, one must consider that its more in the mind to be willing for it. When the words we read match/ refute the state of mind, thats when words are most effective. Body, Mind, Soul and the World – all entities whether different or fragments of the same “universe” – what matters is what in life are we giving those entities. For example: When we wake up each day, we consciously or unconsciously decide how our day is going to be and whats going to happen and we also decide how each of that is going to affect us. However, there is one more school of thought that ascribes to the world that – do what you can and leave the rest to the power that guides the universe. And every experience that we have had in our lives are generally lessons we learnt – more difficult the experience – dearer the lesson. Perhaps….its all in the mind to understand, and react to all the words around….

I have personally read that book and its amazing. He being an existential psychologist, pulls your chords to think, analyze and plunge into yourself for introspection. Thats the best part about reading humanistic / existential views. They talk high on “self awareness” and the kind!! Good luck with reading that…. Enjoy the journey

Awesome! I’m so glad to know that someone else has read it too. Also, check out May’s Psychologist Profile on him!!

It is sad to read how he explains the manner in which the modern man has failed to understand the “real meanings of love and will, their sources and interrelations”. But in doing so we see how we can bring a deeper understanding and approach to love. Here are some good quotes by him:

“Hate is not the opposite of love. Apathy is.” (p.29)

“To love means to open ourselves to the negative as well as the positive – to grief, sorrow, and disappointment as well as to joy, fulfillment, and an intensity of consciousness we did not know was possible before.” (p. 100)

“In a world where numbers inexorably take over as our means of identification, like flowing lava threatening to suffocate and fosilize all breathing life in its path; in a world where ‘normality’ is defined as keeping your cool; where sex is so available that the only way to preserve any inner center is to have intercourse without committing yourself—in such a schizoid world, which young people experience more directly since they have not had time to build up the defenses which dull the senses of their elders, it is not surprising that will and love have become increasingly problematic and even, as some people believe, impossible of achievement.” (p. 21)

“Depression is the inability to construct a future.” (p.243)

“Our patients are the ones who express and live out the subconscious and unconscious tendencies in the culture. The neurotic, or person suffering from what we now call character disorder, is characterized by the fact that the usual defenses of the culture do not work for him—a generally painful situation of which he is more or less aware..” (p. 20)
