  1. From the discussion DS Problem

    Wed, 15 Apr 2009 12:52:40 -0000

For the pqrs question- you’re right, I forgot that p cannot be 0. My explanation still stands though, if you use 1/2 for p the product would still be negative.

For the coordinate question- statement 1 is not sufficient, since it gives 2 points for E (0,4) which is 3 units away, and (0, – 4) which is more than 3 units away. B isn’t sufficient either (pretty clear since we don’t know E, and if you use distance formula you’ll get more than 1 answer). Together though, we can just plug in the two points from A into the condition in B- you get that (0, 4) is 3 units away from A and 6 from C, so it fits. (0, – 4) doesn’t fit, so the answer must be (0,4) and therefore you need both statements.

This one’s pretty easy, as long as you know that if 2 ^ x = 2 ^ y, x=y (can be proved using log rules). So we got 2m – n = 1 straight away. Then since 256 = 2 ^ 8, statement 1 gives us that n = 3 so we get just plug in and solve for m, so it’s clearly sufficient. Statement 2 says m + 2n = 8, and then you can use the 2 equations to solve for m and n, so it’s sufficient too. Therefore answer is D.

  2. From the lesson Perfect Pitch - what's it like?

Great story. I wish I had perfect pitch… or relative pitch… or anything. I don’t even know the basic notes. Yet I still enjoy playing guitar and singing. Cool.

Tex Error means there’s an error in the formula editor we use (it’s call Tex). It’s not a mathematical expression you need to be familiar with for any particular exam, don’t worry.

Oh, you can be both. Throughout your day you probably use several of these listening types- people listening when you’re talking to friends, time oriented listening when you’re late for something, action-oriented in a boring lecture or class, content oriented when you’re listening to some interesting news, and not listening at all when your mother asks you to clean your room.

  5. From the discussion FURIOUSNESS....

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 17:00:59 -0000

Anger is one of the basic human emotions (happiness, sadness, anger and fear). It’s very related to psychology, especially the cognitive and behavioral schools of psychology.

Hyperactivity in itself does not tend to cause mental instability, unless it gets to a point when it disturbs the lives of a person and those around him. However, hyperactivity is sometimes associated with certain mental disorders (such as attention deficit, trauma, learning disabilities, and more).

If you’re interested in psychology, why not apply to a psychology school?

  6. From the discussion Simple Question (Opinion)

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 16:54:58 -0000

Good question, and I don’t think it’s simple at all.

In my personal opinion, evil does have a conscience, but it’s ill-defined. It’s like you just have a moral compass that points the wrong way. If you’re truly evil, you’ve got to believe that what you’re doing is actually good.

  7. From the discussion Trig Identity

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 16:50:49 -0000

    tan x = sin x / cos x (that’s one of your basic identities). So you plug that in, and now the left side equals sin x / cos x / cos x which reduces to sin x / cos2 x. Then by the basic identity sin2 x + cos2 x = 1, you can rearrange and get sin x / (1 – sin2 x).

    I hope this helps.

  8. From the discussion What are you planning on studying?

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 16:46:14 -0000

I think at a BS level you don’t get to do a lot of research, because you do have a lot to learn before you can start going beyond that and into research. Afterwards though you can get involved if you decide to go for an MS degree. You might also be able to assist existing research, which is always a good idea at first. You should definitely check out a complete curriculum and course offerings before you decide on which school you wish to attend though, if you want to make sure the school offers the type of courses you want.

Yes, top Universities do offer financial aid. However, these are incredibly hard to get- the big awards would go to the smartest people in the world. The top schools also have loan programs do if you manage to apply successfully. However, it’s important to be realistic- chance are that unless you’re quite brilliant you’ll have to pay for most of your education yourself.

  10. From the discussion In A Fix NOW HOW TO GO AND SHOW TO THE AUTHORITIES WHAT U R???

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 16:41:01 -0000

Schools don’t really look for a personality as much as just to see that you’d fit and be a good student with potential. Academics are a big part, no matter what everyone says, and if you’ve been at the relative top of your class consistently you’re definitely doing well in those terms. Other things schools are looking for- leadership abilities, communication skills, extracurriculars, volunteer experience, etc. You have something to show in each of these categories, and your bonds with your teachers will allow you to get good recommendation letters.

In the following years, I would concentrate on finding the right school (and country) for you- the LearnHub Directory is a perfect place to start. If you need TOEFL or SAT scores, study hard for those tests and do as well as you can. Get involved in different extracurricular activities (sports? Music? Drama?) to show creativity and a broader range of interests and talents. And keep volunteering and helping school services.

The bottom line is- schools will only get to know you according to what you write them in admissions essays, and the info/certificates you submit. As long as you can make it sound good, anything can help push you forward.

  11. From the discussion Some One Help

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 16:33:11 -0000

Did you get rejected from the program, or for a student visa?

I’ve heard it’s not always easy to get a student visa, especially since you do need proof that you intend to go back to your home country after you graduate in some cases. If you’re trying to settle in Canada or want to stay here and work after you’ve studied, applying for a student visa will be difficult.

I suggest you consult a professional that deals with immigration and visa laws. Calling the Canadian Embassy near you and asking them can help you out.

  12. From the trivia question GMAT- Quantitative Section Q#103: Two rectangular carpets have the same area. The red carpet has dimensions 6x12, and the black carpet has a width of 24. What's the length of the black carpet?

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 14:45:34 -0000

It depends, some conventions tend to call the “width” the shorter of the two dimensions. In other cases you’ll find that on a grid, the horizontal length is the width and the vertical one is the length (or height in some cases). I don’t think it makes a huge difference.

  13. From the discussion DS Problem

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 14:15:55 -0000

I agree regarding the first question. It will be corrected on the test shortly, thanks for pointing this out.

Regarding the second question- statement 1 says that q > 2 and s > 4. Therefore those 2 sections are clearly positive, and we’re left with (p – 1)(r – 3) ^ 3. But we don’t know what p and r are, so they can fall in any range- for example, if p = 0 but r = 5, the product is negative, but if p = 1 the product is 0. Therefore the first statement is insufficient.

Statement 2 is sufficient, since we know that x ^ 2 or x ^ 4 are always > = 0 regardless of x. Thus the answer should be B. Let me know if there’s any error here.

  14. From the discussion how do i get in to MIT USA

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 13:53:16 -0000

The procedure is- go to their website, look up the requirements for admissions, and apply. MIT is one of the top schools in the US, especially for engineering and technology, so you’ll need top SAT scores, TOEFL scores, and scores in the 12th standard exams. In addition, MIT is an expensive school, so unless you’re an absolute top student who can get a scholarship (and that’s really hard), you’ll need money.

  15. From the lesson 5 Commonly Mistaken "B" Words

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 13:45:12 -0000

For tests, essays, and official grammar, I would not use “but” in the beginning of a sentence. However, for poetic and creative writing purposes you can use “but” in the beginning for dramatic effect or to separate/emphasize thoughts and ideas (as discussed in the lesson). If you’re not an experienced writer in English though, it’s best to never use it, be on the safe side.

  16. From the lesson How to Register for the SAT

    Tue, 14 Apr 2009 13:41:59 -0000

Yes, if you would like to start school in the fall 2010 term, it’s best advice to have your SAT scores all ready before December of the year before. This is because the admissions process for the top US colleges take a long time.

However, if you’re not aiming towards colleges like Harvard or Yale, there’s no need to stress. You can still find great places to study, and these colleges are easier to get into. Not all colleges require SAT subject tests, so you might not want to do those right away- focus on the regular SAT first and clear it because it’s the most likely to be required. Also you should probably write the TOEFL test.

You can contact some great school and send your inquiry about applications through our Directory.

  17. From the discussion master of physiotherapy in usa

    Fri, 10 Apr 2009 15:21:06 -0000

A lot of schools will offer a MSc in physiothrapy (Master of Science in Physiotherapy), not a Master of Physiotherapy. There’s no real difference, MSc is a masters degree and they’re both acceptable. If you want to be a physiotherapist though, after you get your masters you will likely have to write a test and go through a period of internship to get an official designation of a professional physiotherapist.

Like Sureshbala suggested, taking the TOEFL and GRE will be the first step. Afterwards, find a physiotherapy program that fits you. I wouldn’t worry about the doctorate until after you’re done the masters, if you find at that point that you want to get more education then another degree may be a good idea, but you might find that your masters is enough to get a good job.

    Good luck.

  18. From the discussion problem on "mixtures"

    Fri, 10 Apr 2009 15:15:51 -0000

Ok, let’s see if I get this straight. We have 20 litres in a solution, 2 is water, 18 is wine. The ratio of wine to the entire volume is 81:100.

Now, the ratio of water to wine is 2:18, which is equal to 1:9 and 9:81. Therefore, the ratio between the water and the whole solution volume is 9:100. But we only have 20L, so if we divide both sides by 5 we get 1.8L : 20L. Hence I’m thinking the solution should be A, 1.8.

I don’t know, this seems a bit weird, I may be wrong.

  19. From the lesson 10 Ways to Avoid Writing Insecurity

    Fri, 10 Apr 2009 14:44:04 -0000

I like rules 5 and 6 best. I hate rules, so when I write creatively I can go chaotic. I write random sections at a time and link tem later (if I feel like it), it’s all very non-structured, but it’s fun. I also usually write for someone specific (although that person can change while I’m writing), it totally helps maintain a focus and a tone that makes sense.

Here’s my tip- imagine. It’s really important to be in the mindset of a character, especially if you write first person, try to experience the situation as you’re writing it. It’s not easy at first but once you get the hang of it you’ll be much more secure and free in your writing.
