  2. From the lesson Brain Rules

    Mon, 29 Dec 2008 03:58:09 -0000

    Hello Peter:

Thanks for sharing this great presentation. Overall, it is giving nice, brief and very practical information for presentation skills for many students, businessmen (especially for marketers and salespeople….even for CEOs), teachers, religious leaders. The context is giving good lesson and emotional parts of human-beings, but you are advertising a book as well!

“Rule of thumb” has a great value in this presentation. Dr. John Medina’s quotes are giving wonderful lessons for people from all walks of life. Let’s remember 3 golden rules and put in our lives. -Exercise boosts brain power -People don’t like boring things -Let’s appeal to people’s vision

I found out very interesting in this presentation for the fact that many professors, and salespeople I met are doing a hell-mistake during their presentations. This hell-mistake break the rule #2 completely, because they are really boring and unfortunately only reading the exactly the same things they wrote at their powerpoint presentations. They don’t pay attention to “attention span of a human being which is only 18 min”...just to finish the classes or sales presentations soon, they take people’s time non-stop for about 1,5 hr or 2 hour. Then they expect everybody to remember everything. Then they aren’t successful for selling their products or lost contacts of current dealers…. They only eat people’s brain cells and people don’t have any oxygen to think or give feedback. Brain rules don’t work, because people are ended up as brainless. No BRAIN, No RULES.

I enjoyed it, and agree many points in your presentation, Peter! kind regards, oznur

  3. From the lesson An ESL Innovation for International Schools

    Sat, 22 Nov 2008 19:17:42 -0000

I am an international student and English is my second language. I have been in the USA for 4 years and did further education in Business and Social Sciences in New York. This is my first time I have heard about “Business as a Second Language” and I think it is very interesting and brilliant idea to have BSL, especially for foreign students with MBA or searching an acceptance to MBA. I will definitely consider to search more about this program.

I read the article called “An ESL Innovation for International Schools”.I disagree some of the points in this article. First TOEFL test style has changed 3 years ago. It used to be only writing and grammar structure in English. But, now IBT Toefl test is also measuring speaking and using the academic language in an academic settings. It is really measuring how you use English in terms of understanding, speaking& using in academic setting and how you use in daily life.

Additionally, MBA programs requires international students to have proficiency in English (high Toefl score and also proven ability to use english by an interview with an advisor in language department in the college) before they get admitted. The students who don’t meet the language requirement is advised to take english advanced courses prior to acceptance to MBA. Some colleges give free advanced ESL classes to help students who are potential to MBA programs.

I will definitely explore and take some BSL courses, but I do believe TOEFL, college exams and other measurements can still test the ability how international students use english in terms of their pronounciation, speaking and reading skills.

    Kind Regards, Oznur Aycil
