I’d recommend something like slicehost, especially for sandboxing. Starting at 20 bucks a month, you get your own (virtual) server which you can do whatever you want with. You get to choose the linux distro (usually the one you’re most comfortable with already) and can literally install anything you want on it.

I’ve had great luck with them so far. Another similar highly-recommended provider is mediatemple.

I have a couple Rack application running on a 512 slice at Slicehost, very excellent service and great performance. From my experience it’s noticeably more responsive than a small EC2 instance. I’ve also heard good things about Linode although I have not used them myself.

  2. From the trivia question CSS: I have a simple document containing a long paragraph of text (P) with an image (IMG) placed roughly in the middle of the text. There are no styles in the document yet. I want to place the image 8 pixels higher than its normal, unstyled position - what should I add to the image's 'style' attribute to achieve this?

Yes, but the ‘img’ tag is an inline element, not a block-level one.
