  1. From the discussion feelings of fatigue

    Wed, 01 Apr 2009 12:57:41 -0000

    Answer is B (14%).

    I think in the 1st line of the question, the word ‘who’ should be inserted between ‘interns’ and ‘receive’ as it is given in later part of the question that 80% of interns receive less than 6 hours of sleep. Hence, 20% of interns receive 6 or more hours of sleep.

    Interns complaining of fatigue = 75% of 80% of total interns = 60% of interns

    Hence, interns who don’t complain of fatigue = 70% of (balance 20% of total interns) = 14% of interns

    C & B.

    PS: Let m be the no. of males and f be the no. of females last year.

    So, total members last year = m + f

    Total members this year = 1.1 (m+f)

    Now, it is given that 1.1 (m+f) = 1.05 m + 1.2 f

    Hence, 0.05 m = 0.1 f

    or m = 2f

    Fraction of females to total members of soccer league this year = 1.2f/(1.1m+1.1f)

    Substituting m=2f, we get the desired fraction as = 1.2f/3.3f = 1.2/3.3 = 12/33 = 4/11

    So, answer is B.

    SC: E &

    Problem solving: C (0.8)

    Solving, we get a(b+10a)+b(a+10b)=2b(b+10a)

    or ab+10a2+ab+ 10b2=2b2+20ab

    or 10a2+8b2-18ab=0

    Dividing the equation by ab, we get:

    10a/b+8b/a-18=0

    Let a/b=k, we get:

    10k+8/k-18=0, or

    10k2-18K+8=0, or

    5k^2-9k+4=0

    Solving for k, i.e a/b, we get k = a/b = 0.8

    Sentence Completion: E.

    Quantitative Comparison: B. It is easier once Col. B is rewritten as 6/30 or (1/30 + 1/30 + 1/30 + 1/30 + 1/30 + 1/30). As 1/30 > any of the 6 individual elements in Col.A, 6/30 or 1/5 will naturally be > sum of the 6 elements in Col.A.

  10. From the discussion Time-Work Problem

    Fri, 13 Feb 2009 10:30:07 -0000

    I think this may be an easy manner to solve the above problem -

    (A+B+C)’s one day’s output = 1/15, hence their 2 days’ output = 2/15 —(1)

    C’s one day’s output = 1/75, C’s 40 days’ output = 40/75 = 8/15

    Hence, balance work done by B & C (in 10 days) = 1- (2/15) – (8/15) = 5/15 = 1/3

    Hence, per day output of (B + C) = (1/10) x (1/3) = 1/30 (2)

    From (1) & (2) above, we get per day output of A alone = (1/15) – (1/30) = 1/30

    Hence, A can alone complete the whole work in 30 days.

  11. From the discussion Time-Work Problem

    Fri, 13 Feb 2009 07:05:53 -0000

    In problem 2, ideally, no equation is required -

    Work done by Ramya alone in 5 days = 5 x (1/30) = 1/6

    Hence, balance work after 5 days = 5/6

    Together, Ramya & Subha can complete the entire work in 12 days ( 1/(1/20+1/30) )

    Hence, time required to complete balance work (5/6) together = 12×5/6 = 10 days

      Definitely equation can be eliminated here…coming to that case calculating LCM of 30 and 20 can also be eliminated.

      Even in your calculation you have calculate the LCM of 30 and 20 and besides that you have made other calculation that is 1-1/6 = 5/6. All this I have put in one equation…

      (5+x)/30 + x/20 = 1 is same as x/30+x/20 = 1-(5/30)= 5/6.

      This is definitely quicker….

      Of course there’s a way to eliminate the LCM…look at this guys….

      Since the time ratio of R and S is 3: 2, the efficiency ratio is 2:3 and hence the work will be shared by them in the ratio of 2:3 when they work together.

      Since after R worked for 5 days, 5/6 of the work is remaining.

      This 5/6 of the work is done by R and S together.

      So out of this 5/6, the share of R is 2/5(5/6) = 1/3

      So if R does 1/3 of the work the work will be completed.

      To do 1/3 of the work, R takes 10 days. So they worked together for 10 days…

      This is also definitely quicker…but one need to master the concepts of ratios for this…

      Soon I will come up with a lesson on these concepts ….

  12. From the discussion Does creative writing include diary writing too?

    Fri, 13 Feb 2009 05:08:08 -0000

    I partly agree with the views expressed here. As far as writing in one’s personal diary is concerned, one can afford to record in a more casual (at least i think so in my case) and brief manner some important events of one’s day to day or personal/social/professional life and occasional strong ideas/emotions that come to mind from time to time. Here, i believe, the main purpose is to just have a brief chronological record of events you consider personally important to you, for your own reference (i occasionally refer :)) at a later stage and not for publicity.

    I agree that it is another matter that such record of events could serve as a very important guide to facilitate creation of more serious creative works, including but not limited to writing one’s own autobiography, which may or may not be intended for general/wider/limited publicity.

    Thanks for posting this thought provoking story, Tiffany! I can understand and must appreciate the dilemma in your mind after reading this story as to what is real and what is not! Without going into any philosophical discussion, all I would say is that the way the humans behave, physically and emotionally, is no better or may be worse than how the robots have been shown to behave in the story AND as you rightly wonder, with technology and other material comforts, the situation is not becoming better as regards the human loneliness.

    To be brief and not sounding too complicated, i would say, the situation above is so because of our seeking the pleasure and love in material things, outside of our own/real self that is self-fulfilling/luminous. The need to dive to the depths ‘within’ to discover that real self and real love, attaining which the reliance on the outside/fleeting things (including what one considers his own mind and intellect) will vanish, impliedly gets reaffirmed thru’ this story! Thanks again and God bless you.

  20. From the discussion My favorite math jokes

    Fri, 06 Feb 2009 04:46:35 -0000

    Interesting! Got this one from a friend. Here it goes -

    Equation 1

    Human = eat + sleep + work + enjoy

    Donkey = eat + sleep

    Therefore,

    Human = Donkey + work + enjoy

    Therefore,

    Human – enjoy = Donkey + work

    In other words,

    Human that don’t know enjoy = Donkey that work

    Equation 2

    Men = eat + sleep + earn money

    Donkeys = eat + sleep

    Therefore,

    Men = Donkeys + earn money

    Therefore,

    Men – earn money = Donkeys

    In other words,

    Men that don’t earn money = Donkeys

    Equation 3

    Women = eat + sleep + spend

    Donkeys = eat + sleep

    Therefore,

    Women = Donkeys + spend

    Therefore,

    Women – spend = Donkeys

    In other words,

    Women that don’t spend = Donkeys

    To Conclude:

    From Equation 2 and Equation 3

    Men that don’t earn money = Women that don’t spend.

    So, Men earn money not to let women become Donkeys! (Postulate 1)

    And, Women spend not to let men become Donkeys! (Postulate 2)

    So, we have?

    Men + Women = Donkeys + earn money + Donkeys + spend money

    Therefore from Postulates 1 and 2, we can conclude,

    Man + Woman = 2 Donkeys that live happily together!
