  1. From the lesson Inspiring Quotes

    Sun, 27 Jul 2008 22:06:38 -0000

“you must take the fat with the lean” (American saying). Well, dpak, this saying is popular in America but I think its truth has to do about the secret of happiness of Buscaglia. We should accept the fact that life is not just pleasure and seek the life with whichever surprises comes with it. Choosing life as a whole is a good filosophical point that Nietzische explains very well when he talks about amor-fati (love to destiny). Good quotes!!

  2. From the discussion Favourite Literary Characters

    Wed, 09 Jul 2008 05:16:32 -0000

The character described in book that I admire most is not fictional although the writer had to imagine everything about him and made a research that lasted half of her life. The book is “Adrianos’s memoirs” from Marguerite Yourcenar. It’s impressive how could she write a book about a Roman emperor as if she was him!! The book is magnificent! You feel the personality of the “character” strongly!

  7. From the discussion The Catcher In the Rye is Overrated

    Tue, 24 Jun 2008 02:06:21 -0000

I liked the book! Not only because it talks about juvenile depression (wich is a serious matter), but else because I admire how the author, beeing an adult, could write as if he were an adolescent…

I’ll agree with the fact that the author succeeded in getting into the depressed teenage frame of mind for this character in an extraordinary manner. However, I really don’t think people are like that… not even depressed teenagers, and I’ve known quite a bunch of those.

Teenage depression is a very serious matter, and I think that it may be getting a bit out of hand in some societies. But after reading this book, which can actually encourage depression and make it seem as if feeling isolated and bitter towards the world is a natural thing and there’s nothing wrong about it, I don’t believe it does a very good job at fighting depression at all. And that’s a bad thing.

But it’s perfectly fair for you to enjoy this book, after all many people consider it a classic and a must-read, so there must be something to it.

  8. From the discussion What's your favorite book, and why?

    Tue, 24 Jun 2008 01:58:33 -0000

I can see everybody here prefer novels….I have no patient to read novels. I prefer reading philosofy essays. biographies and so on…To be interesting, a book must be based on real life. I’ve read “Undaunted Courage” from Ambrose,Stephen E. It’s a wonderful book about Jeferson’s time and the voyage that Lewis and Clark made after the Louisiana’s purchase…I really loved it!

I love reading but if a book doesn’t please me enough I abandon it imediately…All spare time that I have you’ll encounter me with a book in hands, or a magazine, or anything readable.I think that there are too many books to be read to spend your time with a book that isn’t good enough!

  13. From the discussion English is simpler than French

    Thu, 05 Jun 2008 03:25:27 -0000

I’m pretty fluent in written french but I cannot speak it, I don’t know why.I can read and write but it’s too difficult to understand when someone speak it to you even personally. As a Brazillian I can understand spanish very well, even so, I never studied spanish. I think english is the most easy language to learn although its roots are completely different from my native language (portuguese). It’s ironic that french has the same roots of the portuguese language and I find english easier to learn.
